On Oct. 9, officers responded to 1824 E Bennett St. about a dead person found in some bushes. The victim was Bryan York. York had several visible external injuries consistent with being assaulted, according to the probable cause statement.

During the investigation, police believed York was homeless as there were several belongings and trash in the area where he was found. A cell phone was located near him, which at the time, police believed was York’s. The phone was later searched and was discovered to belong to a known associate of York, Jimmy Nunnery.

On Oct. 12, a witness was interviewed and stated Nunnery and York were fighting each other on Bennett Street. She told police Nunnery was on top of York holding him down with his forearm and allegedly punched him until he became unresponsive. The witness said she left with Nunnery leaving York behind.

On Oct. 17, police located and arrested Nunnery in Jackson, Tennessee.

This is Springfield’s 10 th homicide investigation in 2024, with the 12 th victim for the year.
