Spencer Man Facing Felony Domestic Assault Charge
–A Spencer man is facing a felony charge after being taken into custody early Wednesday morning at ABATE Park. According to the Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office, Deputies responded to a request for assistance at ABATE Park around 3:30 AM Wednesday. After conducting a brief investigation, Deputies arrested 26-year-old Austin David Chinn of Spencer on a charge of Domestic Abuse Assault—Impeding Air/Blood Flow Causing Bodily Injury, a Class D Felony.
Former Kossuth County Sheriff dies from battle with cancer
WHITTEMORE, Iowa-- The Whittemore community and Kossuth County are mourning the loss of one if its own. Former Kossuth County Sheriff, Stephen Michael Kollasch died early Saturday morning at the age of 60 from a battle with cancer. He served as the Kossuth County Sheriff from 2008 until his retirement in 2021. Kollasch, a Mason City native, started his law enforcement career in Garner in 1991, serving as a police officer. In 1993, Kollasch and his wife, Deb, moved to Whittemore, where his parents were from to serve as a deputy with the Kossuth County Sheriff's Department. He also lived in Rochester for a short time. Kollasch and his wife were owners of the whittemore car wash.
Stop Leads to Drug Charges Against Forest City Man
–A Winnebago County man was taken into custody on multiple drug-related charges following the report of a suspicious vehicle Sunday evening near Titonka. According to the Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office, Deputies received the report of a suspicious vehicle in the rural Titonka area just after 8:15 PM Sunday. After conducting a search of the area, Deputies located the vehicle and conducted a stop.
Hazelnut Field Day and Orchard Tour set for Kossuth County
FENTON, Iowa – A North Iowa Hazelnut Field Day and Orchard Tour is taking place July 14 at Hazel Acres in Fenton. Healthy Harvest of North Iowa, Nut Haven, The Iowa Nut Growers Association, and Hazel Acres says it’s a chance to learn about hazelnut production, processing, pruning, agroforestry and water quality benefits of perennial crops.
Floodwaters swamp Kossuth County roads
The East Fork of the Des Moines River flooded several Kossuth County roadways after heavy rains Friday, June 21. While road crews have put up barricades and done some work, the full scope of the damage won’t be known until the water recedes.
Titonka Man is Latest “1440” Winner
–A Titonka man is the latest recipient of the “1440 Citizen of the Month” award from the Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Roger Fisher announced this week that David Trunkhill is the award winner for the month of June. Trunkhill was nominated for the dedication he shows to his community, serving as the Fire Chief in Titonka for over 20 years.

Iowa Time Machine ⏰: On June 28, 1979, an F3 tornado hit northwest of Algona, Iowa, the county seat of Kossuth County, around 7:00 p.m. Part of a day in which 27 tornadoes touched down across the Midwest, a separate F4 tornado hit roughly 50 miles to the southwest in Manson. Five people (two in Algona, three in Manson) lost their lives in the storm.
