Amid concerns and confusion, a new Texas law making illegal entry a state crime stirs anxiety for undocumented migrants and mixed-status families along the US-Mexico border. Advocates fear racial profiling, detentions, and deportations once the law, Senate Bill 4 (SB4), takes effect in March.

The law, signed by Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, grants local law enforcement authority to arrest migrants and judges the power to deport them to Mexico. Protests against SB4 highlight worries about racial profiling and increased threats to families.

Similar to a contentious 2010 Arizona law, the Texas law faces criticism and legal challenges. Civil rights groups, including the ACLU, challenge SB4's constitutionality, arguing it undermines federal law on immigration.

Local officials and advocates express concerns over potential negative impacts, citing fear among immigrant communities, possible abuse of powers, and erosion of trust between law enforcement and residents. Advocates worry about increased harassment and the criminalization of individuals seeking safety.

The law arrives amid a surge in illegal border crossings, with over 10,500 migrants processed in a single day, straining federal resources and heightening tensions between Abbott's government and the Biden administration.

Critics condemn the law, asserting it may make Texans less safe by undermining community trust and leading to unlawful interrogations and arrests based on appearance or behavior. Despite concerns, some urge the community to remain calm while raising questions about the law's implementation and impact.
