Massive Ocean Swells Cause Flooding Along West Coast and Hawaiian Shores

Powerful ocean swells hit West Coast and Hawaii beaches, causing localized flooding due to a big swell generated by the stormy Pacific Ocean. Forecasters cautioned against standing on rocks or jetties and advised against turning back to the ocean to avoid "sneaker waves," which can unexpectedly surge and pose dangers.

A high surf warning in Northern California predicted waves from 28 to 33 feet and up to 40 feet at certain locations, leading to reports of flooding in low-lying coastal regions. In Aptos, surf overflowed beaches, sweeping into parking lots and leaving debris in its wake. Coastal warnings for potential evacuations were issued in Santa Cruz County.

Residents expressed concern about the massive waves, recalling similar occurrences from last January, when the West Coast was hit by numerous atmospheric rivers. Surf along Southern California's coast was also perilous, with life-threatening rip currents, yet surfers were drawn to the waves, exercising patience to catch the "sick" waves.

In Hawaii, the weather service projected surf reaching 30 to 40 feet on north-facing shores and 18 to 22 feet on west-facing shores across five islands. Local surfers, like Sheldon Paishon, advised caution for beginners and urged them to consult lifeguards before venturing into the water due to the potential dangers.

Honolulu Ocean Safety lifeguards rescued 20 individuals along Oahu's North Shore and carried out numerous preventive actions amidst the dangerous surf. The weather service cautioned about surges that might affect coastal properties and roadways, emphasizing the dangerous nature of the current conditions.
