Yes, abandoning a dog is illegal in Idaho and is considered animal cruelty:AbandonmentIdaho Code 25-3512 defines abandonment as neglecting or refusing to provide care for an animal, or forsaking it entirely. This includes disposing of an animal at a shelter or veterinary clinic without making arrangements for its care. Animal crueltyIdaho Code 25-3502 defines animal cruelty as knowingly abandoning an animal, or inflicting unnecessary suffering or cruelty on an animal.PenaltiesConvicted offenders can face misdemeanor charges, which can include jail time up to six months, a fine of at least $100, or bothAnimal care and controlAnimal care and control officers or law enforcement officers are responsible for taking possession of abandoned animals. If no owner can be found, sick, disabled, or crippled animals may be humanely destroyed.
