MESA COUNTY, Colo. ( KREX ) – On Tuesday, Montrose County Public Health announced its first case of West Nile virus.

The case was confirmed in a 70-year-old male, according to the county. The virus most commonly spreads to people by the bite of an infected mosquito. Last year, the county had two reported cases.

“Now is the time to continue to stay watchful and prepared,” Montrose County Public Health Director Jim Austin said in a press release. “Despite the cooler evening temperatures, mosquitoes are still a concern until the temperatures drop consistently. Simple steps such as wearing an effective insect repellent, wearing protecting or long-sleeve clothing, mosquito-proofing your home and possibly staying indoors when mosquitoes are most active are key to helping avoid West Nile virus.”

Most people infected with the virus don’t have symptoms. According to the county, around 20% of infected people develop flu-like symptoms while less than 1% get a serious, potentially deadly illness.

The county recommended ways to stop contracting the disease including using insect repellent especially those containing DEET, picaridin and IR3535. Additionally, some oil of lemon eucalyptus and para-menthane-diol products provide protection. Other best practices are limiting outdoor activities around dusk or dawn and wearing protective clothing in areas where mosquitoes are active.
