Grand Junction Jackalopes could be on the move

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. ( KREX )—Jackalopes owner Mike Tollin expressed concern over the team’s future during a recent Grand Junction City Council meeting, requesting financial assistance to cover an estimated $100,000 in operational costs.

“As the only professional sports team in the community, it would be tragic to see us leave,” Tollin said.

Tollin, a lifelong baseball fan, purchased the team last year with his son. “My dream was to own a baseball team with my son, and now he’s working with the Jackalopes,” Tollin said. “We even made a film this past year, which represents my view on why baseball is so ingrained in American life. I want this team to be an integral part of the community.”

Despite his passion, Tollin has faced financial challenges, including difficulties filling seats despite lowering ticket prices, incorporating on-field promotions, and introducing in-seat food ordering.

City Council members, however, were hesitant to commit funds.

“It doesn’t make sense,” said Council member Anna Stout. “What guarantee is there down the road? No one on council felt comfortable giving them a significant amount of money without a business plan and other details.” said Council member Scott Beilfuss

Mike Shapiro, president of the Pioneer League echoed Tollin’s concerns. “Mike has suffered significant losses this year,” he said. “From the league’s perspective, it’s unsustainable. A team has to, at the very least, break even.”

The Jackalopes ended their season last month, finishing last in the Pioneer League. With no financial assistance from the city, Tollin hinted at the possibility of relocation.

“There are two other cities willing to court the team if Grand Junction can’t,” Tollin said.

“If someone in the community wants to pick up the $100,000 bill and put their name on the team, I’m sure the doors are open. But we don’t have that kind of money in town anymore.” said Scott Beilfuss

The city needs to help out! The guy is doing his best to keep the team here and I’m sure things will improve next year.
