Grand Junction football cruises to third straight league win

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. ( KREX ) — Entering Thursday with their best start (6-1) since 2011, Grand Junction welcomed 4A I-25 league foe Centaurus to Stocker Stadium.

Having already dominated their first two league games (48-13 over 1-6 Gateway and 57-7 over 0-7 Thornton), the Tigers faced their toughest league test yet against the 4-3 Warriors.

From the very first snap, the Tigers looked well on their way to passing that test.

Following an opening-drive fumble recovery, Mathias Martinez put the Tigers up 7-0 with a six-yard score. Then, after a Rylan Mulvey interception, Will Applegate punched it in from a yard out. Applegate then made the play on defense batting down a pass on 4th down. On the ensuing play, Martinez found an open lane and flew home for six. Still in the first quarter, Grand Junction led it 22-0.

The Tigers would continue to roll and win it 42-22 — a score that made the game feel closer than it was thanks to a pair of late scores from Centarus.

Grand Junction, for the moment, takes sole possession of first place in the league. Here are the updated 4A I-25 league standings:

1. Grand Junction 3-0 (7-1)
2. Sand Creek 2-0 (5-2)
3. Cheyenne Mountain 1-1 (5-2)
4. Centaurus 1-2 (3-4)
5. Gateway 0-2 (1-6)
6. Thornton 0-2 (0-7)

Sand Creek takes on Gateway and Cheyenne Mountain battles Thornton on Friday.

Elsewhere in high school football, Cedarege edged out Grand Valley 8-7.
