DMV introduces new license feature for California drivers

The California DMV has taken an exciting step toward modernizing personal identification by introducing the state's first mobile driver's license, or "mDL."

California drivers and ID card holders can essentially upload their existing identity documents to their phones, eliminating the need to carry a physical card with them whenever they drive, travel, or purchase adult beverages.

California residents can upload their existing driver's licenses or ID cards to their phones, eliminating the need to carry a physical driver's license card whenever they drive or travel. The mobile driver's license is also valid for TSA PreCheck at San Francisco (SFO) and Los Angeles (LAX) airports.

The California DMV is currently running a voluntary pilot program for the mDL. To enroll, visit the CA DMV website. You will need a smartphone and a valid California driver's license or ID card. After enrolling in the pilot, you will need to download the CA DMV Wallet app from the Apple App Store (iPhone users) or Google Play (Android users.)

After setting up your California DMV account on the app, you'll be prompted to scan your driver's license or ID with your phone to save it in the app.

By joining this voluntary pilot program, you can be among the first in California to carry your driver's license on your smartphone. However, the pilot is limited to 1.5 million participants, so early enrollment is encouraged.
