Unexpected Tricks for Storing Your Favorite Foods!

The difference proper food storage can make to minimize waste and save money is huge. By understanding the best methods of storing different products, you are able to prolong their life and enjoy them at their best in terms of flavor and texture.

    Bread

The thinking that bread must be stored in the refrigerator is a myth. As a matter of fact, the cold from the refrigerator can speed up the staling process by drying out bread. Store it at room temperature instead, in an airtight bag, or a bread box. If you don't think you will use it in time, it would be better to freeze it. But slice it first, so you don't have to thaw out the whole loaf just for getting a little!

    Apples

Apples are fruits that unleash a gas called ethylene, which tends to increase the rate of ripening and lead to spoilage. Apples should be kept away from other fruit! It is also good to store apples in the crisper drawer in your refrigerator because that will help keep them fresh longer, not too hot nor too cold.

    Onions and Potatoes

Both of these staples are best kept in a cool, dry place but need to be kept away from each other. Onions give off gases when they are stored, and these gases will increase sprouting activity in the potatoes, forcing their shelf life to dwindle. Better to keep them apart, but they thrive on being held in airy storage containers, like baskets or mesh bags, that prevent the build-up of moisture which leads to mold and spoilage problems!

    Nuts

Nuts have very high oil content and hence have a tendency to become rancid, particularly under hot conditions. Store nuts in an airtight container in the refrigerator or even the freezer. The refrigerated cold atmospheric condition will preserve its oils, hereby expanding freshness and flavor for months.

These small changes with storage will make a great difference in the lives of your foods, preventing waste, and enabling you to get the most out of your groceries!
