RICHMOND, VA - Virginia's commitment to fostering innovative educational opportunities took a significant stride forward as the Virginia Board of Education recently approved the establishment of two new Lab Schools, spearheaded by Old Dominion University and George Mason University.

Governor Glenn Youngkin lauded the development, emphasizing the pivotal role these institutions will play in enriching educational landscapes. "Increasing innovative education opportunities for students and parents in Virginia is at the heart of our Lab School initiative," stated Governor Youngkin. "These two Lab Schools will bring valuable STEM education to the Hampton Roads and Shenandoah Valley communities and brings our total to 14 across the Commonwealth."

The establishment of these Lab Schools underscores a concerted effort to equip students with the necessary skills for the evolving workforce. Secretary of Education Aimee Guidera hailed the collaborative efforts behind the initiatives, noting, "Old Dominion University and George Mason University, together with their school division and community and philanthropic partners, have designed new Lab Schools that will have a tremendous impact on two important regions in Virginia."

President of the Virginia Board of Education, Grace Turner Creasey, expressed confidence in the transformative potential of these institutions, stating, "With the Board’s approval of these Lab Schools yesterday, I am confident that these dynamic schools will foster a generation of students prepared to lead in the technology-focused future that lies ahead."

Superintendent of Public Instruction Lisa Coons echoed sentiments of anticipation, emphasizing the hands-on experiences these schools will afford students. "The two Lab Schools that were approved yesterday will provide Virginia's students with hands-on experiences that will equip and prepare them for new, innovative opportunities," remarked Coons.

Virginia Lab Schools, as outlined, are designed to stimulate the development of innovative education programs, particularly focusing on STEM education and workplace exposure. These programs, developed in partnership with local employers and community organizations, aim to elucidate career pathways for students post-graduation.

The approved Lab Schools stand as a testament to Virginia's commitment to educational innovation, with each institution poised to make a meaningful impact within its respective community.

Old Dominion University’s Lab School, The STEM Academy at Booker T. Washington Elementary School, underscores a collaborative partnership aimed at integrating STEM education into the elementary curriculum. Dr. Tish Szymurski, Associate Vice President for Regional Higher Education Centers at Old Dominion University, expressed enthusiasm for the endeavor, highlighting its potential to cultivate a generation of STEM-literate citizens.

Similarly, George Mason University’s Lab School, The Shenandoah Valley Rural Regional College Partnership Laboratory School for Data Science, Computing and Applications (DCSA Lab School), underscores a collaborative effort to empower students and teachers with data science and computing expertise. Padhu Seshaiyer, Professor and Director at George Mason University, emphasized the multifaceted opportunities these pathways will afford students and educators alike.

The approval of these Lab Schools not only fulfills statutory requirements but also signifies a collective commitment to providing innovative educational opportunities for Virginia's students. As the educational landscape continues to evolve, these institutions are poised to play a vital role in shaping the next generation of leaders and innovators.
