Airplane Crash Near Stevenson Results in One Rescue, One Fatality

STEVENSON, WA – A tragic airplane crash in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest resulted in one fatality and one rescue on Friday evening. The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Air Search and Rescue was alerted at 3:05 p.m. that a 1943 Stearman Kaydet aircraft, enroute to a fly-in event in Hood River, Oregon, did not arrive as expected. The aircraft, part of a three-plane formation, was reported missing after the other two planes landed safely.

The plane, which departed from Enumclaw and stopped at South Lewis County Airport, disappeared northwest of Stevenson. Radar and cell phone forensics determined the flight path ended at 12:59 p.m. Rescue efforts involving the U.S. Coast Guard and Skamania County Search and Rescue teams discovered the wreckage at 6:20 p.m.

One survivor was airlifted to Portland International Airport for medical attention, while another occupant was found deceased at the scene.
