LINN COUNTY, OR — The Oregon State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred in Linn County early on September 14, 2024, following a standoff with a suspect in rural Scio. The incident began when Linn County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle at approximately 12:42 a.m.

Oregon State Police located the suspect vehicle on Shimanek Bridge Drive. Upon arrival, officers found the suspect, later identified as David Tobias Tyler, 46, armed and seated in the driver’s seat. During their interaction, Tyler discharged his firearm, prompting the deployment of the Linn County Regional SWAT Team and the Crisis Negotiation Team.

Despite efforts to resolve the standoff peacefully, Tyler pointed a firearm at officers, leading SWAT to open fire. Tyler was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured during the confrontation, and the pedestrian struck earlier was treated and released from the hospital.

The involved officer has been identified as Sergeant Daniel Ball, a six-year veteran of the Benton County Sheriff’s Office.

The Linn County Regional SWAT Team, consisting of personnel from the Linn and Benton County Sheriff’s Offices, Albany Police Department, and Sweet Home Police Department, responded to the incident. The Oregon State Police, in conjunction with the Linn County District Attorney’s Office, will conduct the primary investigation.
