HILLSBORO, OR — U.S. Army Private William E. Calkins, who died as a prisoner of war during World War II, was laid to rest at Fir Lawn Memorial Park in Hillsboro, Oregon, on September 13, 2024, during a heartfelt memorial service. The ceremony, filled with military honors, marked the end of an 82-year journey to bring the fallen soldier home.

Private Calkins, originally from Oregon, was a member of Company B of the 31st Infantry Regiment and was captured by Japanese forces in the Philippines during World War II. After surviving the Bataan Death March, he died of starvation at the Cabanatuan Prison Camp on November 1, 1942. At the time of his death, Calkins was just 17 years old, having lied about his age to join the military.

His remains were recently identified through DNA analysis and returned to Oregon, where he was buried alongside his mother. The Oregon Army National Guard Funeral Honor Guard conducted the full military honors ceremony.

During the service, Chaplain (Col.) Jacob Scott, Oregon National Guard State Chaplain, officiated the ceremony, and family members gathered to remember the young soldier’s sacrifice. "Billy’s name will forever be adorned with a Brass Rosette, signifying that Billy’s remains will now rest in a known grave," said Scott, referencing Calkins’ name inscribed on the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial.

The event was a powerful reminder of the lasting impact of war and the importance of honoring those who served.
