Albuquerque, NM – Christopher Marquez, 34, of Ohkay Owingeh, has been sentenced to 18 years in federal prison, the statutory maximum, for the torture of a 5-year-old child over a seven-week period in 2021. Marquez, an enrolled member of the Ohkay Owingeh tribe, physically abused the child, causing severe injuries including fractures, internal bleeding, and organ lacerations.

Between May and July 2021, Marquez’s abusive behavior inflicted multiple rib and arm fractures, internal injuries, and extensive bruising, all in varying stages of healing. The injuries reflected a broader pattern of torture against the child, causing great bodily harm.

Upon his release from prison, Marquez will face an additional three years of supervised release. There is no parole in the federal system.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Mark A. Probasco and Matthew J. McGinley.

U.S. Attorney Alexander M.M. Uballez made the announcement today.
