ROSEBURG, Ore. – A residential structure fire broke out at 933 NE Grandview Drive late on October 17, 2024, prompting a swift response from the Roseburg Fire Department. The fire, reported at 11:33 p.m., left two residents displaced and claimed the life of a family cat.

Douglas County Emergency Communications received a 911 call indicating that two residents were heard screaming from the back of the home, with concerns that they might still be inside. Roseburg Police officers were the first to arrive on scene and, upon hearing screams from the rear of the house, located and helped the two residents escape safely from the back of the structure.

When firefighters arrived, they encountered heavy fire and smoke coming from the single-story home, the attached carport, and the front engine compartment of a vehicle in the driveway. Firefighters conducted a thorough search of the property, extinguished the fire, and performed an extensive overhaul to ensure all hot spots were out. The house, carport, and vehicle sustained significant fire, smoke, and water damage.

While the two adult residents were unharmed, one family cat did not survive the fire. Personnel from Adapt assisted the displaced family with temporary housing arrangements.

A fire investigator was on the scene, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation. A total of 13 firefighters responded to the incident, with assistance from Umpqua Valley Ambulance, Central Douglas Fire & Rescue, Roseburg Police Department, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, and Pacific Power.

The Roseburg Fire Department urges the public to ensure their homes are equipped with working smoke alarms on every level, outside sleeping areas, and in each bedroom. They also recommend considering a home fire sprinkler system for added protection.
