Washington, D.C. – Matthew Walker, 25, of Washington, D.C., was sentenced yesterday to 50 years in prison for the 2019 double shooting at a temporary labor agency in Northeast Washington, D.C., which left one man dead and another critically injured. The sentencing was announced by U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Chief Pamela A. Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department.

Walker was convicted in January 2024 in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. In addition to the 50-year prison term, Superior Court Judge Marisa Demeo ordered that Walker serve five years of supervised release following his imprisonment.

The shooting occurred on February 14, 2019, at approximately 5:45 a.m. at Trojan Labor, a temporary labor agency. Walker entered the agency’s dispatch office and opened fire, targeting David Remen, an employee, and Michael Hardy, the agency’s manager. Walker fled the scene, discarding his clothing, mask, and firearm nearby. Mr. Remen died at the scene, while Mr. Hardy succumbed to his injuries in 2022.

Authorities linked Walker to the shooting through DNA evidence from the discarded clothing, mask, and firearm, as well as ballistic evidence and surveillance footage.

U.S. Attorney Graves and Chief Smith praised the efforts of the Metropolitan Police Department in investigating the case. They also acknowledged the work of the U.S. Attorney’s Office, including Assistant U.S. Attorney Prava Palacharla, Deputy Chief Assistant U.S. Attorney Sharon Donavan, and several other members of the team who provided crucial support in forensic, legal, and IT expertise.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Daniel Seidel and Alec Levy led the prosecution.
