Middle Georgia Area – Alphonzo Clyde, 45, the founder of the Macon Mafia criminal street gang, has been sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for illegally possessing a firearm, marking the maximum prison term allowed by law. The sentencing was handed down on October 17, 2024, by U.S. District Judge Marc Treadwell. In addition to the prison term, Clyde will serve three years of supervised release.

Clyde, who has a lengthy criminal history, pleaded guilty in April 2024 to one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. There is no parole in the federal system.

“Alphonzo Clyde and the Mafia wreaked havoc in Macon and beyond for years,” said U.S. Attorney Peter D. Leary. “This significant sentence should directly result in reduced violence, and it would not have been possible without our strong federal and local law enforcement connection.”

Clyde was arrested by officers from the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office and Jones County Sheriff’s Office on October 8, 2023, while wanted for a probation violation. At the time of his arrest, a Taurus G2S 9-millimeter handgun was found in his vehicle’s glovebox, along with drug paraphernalia. Clyde, as a convicted felon, was prohibited from possessing a firearm.

The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a national initiative to reduce gun violence and improve public safety by fostering community trust and supporting targeted law enforcement efforts.

The FBI, Bibb County Sheriff’s Office, and Jones County Sheriff’s Office conducted the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Joy Odom prosecuted the case.
