Following the death of a 4-year-old boy , who was swept away by high waters in Johnson County on Sunday, a county official is defending the authorities against claims there should be more warning signs for such events.

Some residents said they are wondering why some roadways in the county have high water signs and some do not.

"You have to understand in just that little corner of Johnson County, there are 250 miles of roadway that are county-owned. That doesn't even count state highways or any other roadways," Johnson County Emergency Management Director Jamie Moore said. "To drive 250 miles to get gates closed takes some amount of time."

He said flash flooding can happen quickly and in areas drivers don't expect it. Moore said at the end of the day, if you see high water just don't drive in it.
