Texas AG Ken Paxton says he's suing GM for selling drivers’ private data to insurance companies

AUSTIN (1080 KRLD)- Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton says he has filed a lawsuit against General Motors for allegedly finding that they unlawfully accessed drivers' private data and sold it to insurance companies.

In a post published to the social media platform, X , AG Paxton said this discovery follows an investigation into several car manufacturers. Paxton said the collection and sale included that of 1.5 million Texans' private driving data without their consent.

"Our investigation revealed that General Motors has engaged in egregious business practices that violated Texans’ privacy and broke the law. We WILL hold them accountable," reads part of his post. "Companies are using invasive technology to violate the rights of our citizens in unthinkable ways."

Paxton alleges that the use of a comprehensive surveillance system installed in vehicles was used in GM vehicle models 2015 and newer to collect driving data with "lengthy convoluted" disclosure agreements that didn't make people aware of how driving scores would be utilized.
