WATCH LIVE: Dallas PD speaks on incident that led to an officer shot dead, two others hospitalized

A shooting in southeast Oak Cliff on Thursday night resulted in the death of one Dallas police officer and injuries to two others.

Over 20 police units responded to an officer assistance call around 10:10 p.m. on East Ledbetter Drive. Officers arriving at the scene found a colleague shot in his patrol vehicle. During an exchange of gunfire with the suspect, two more officers were wounded. The injured officers were taken to hospitals, where one died, another is in critical condition, and the third is stable.

The suspect fled but was later shot and killed by Dallas police in Lewisville.

Dallas police spokesperson Kristin Lowman expressed the department’s grief and requested the city’s thoughts and prayers. The identities of the officers and the suspect have not been released.

Dallas Mayor Eric L. Johnson released the following statement: "Dallas has lost a hero. We all grieve with the officer’s family today, and we pray for a full and swift recovery for the two officers who were wounded.

"This is devastating. In Dallas, we put public safety first. We stand up to violent criminals. We ask our police officers to do dangerous work so the rest of us can sleep peacefully. These dedicated public servants do so with grace, honor, respect, humility and extraordinary courage. And this attack on three of our protectors is nothing short of an attack on our city, our families, and our way of life. We must continue their work to stop violence in our communities. We must never forget their sacrifice. And we must take the time to come together and lift each other up as we mourn our fallen.”
