Health officials are alarmed at the latest wave of COVID across America, even as federal programs to pay for vaccines have dried up.

Dallas County has ordered the latest vaccines for local health departments to treat underinsured or uninsured residents, but the supply is unpredictable. Some local pharmacies are charging $200 or more for a COVID-19 shot

Some people may not even know they have the virus, but for others, it’s a long-term struggle with major symptoms, and yet for older folks and the chronically ill, COVID has proven deadly. Dallas County Health Director Dr. Philip Huang says this season’s outbreaks make it crucial that vulnerable groups get vaccinated.

"There's now one new sort of COVID vaccine that pretty much most people just need one shot. and if you're particularly high risk then it's really important," Dr. Huang says.

Health officials urge people to get vaccinated because even if the virus doesn’t give you symptoms, you can still be infectious enough to pass it on to those more vulnerable.
