Fort Worth firefighters rescued several animals when they battled a house fire Thursday afternoon on the southeast side of the city.

The fire broke out just before 3 p.m. Thursday in the 4800 block of Arbor Street, according to the Fort Worth Fire Department.

When firefighters arrived, they found a wood frame home with heavy fire and a lot of smoke. As they worked to knock it down, they started to search the house and found a mother cat with two newborns.

They brought them outside and gave them oxygen until they started to breathe again on their own. Then, they found a pregnant dog suffering from smoke inhalation that was struggling to breathe. One bottle of oxygen later she was doing OK.

The city's animal control took all the animals into care.

Firefighters put the fire out, but the home suffered heavy damage, so the Red Cross is helping the three people who live there. They were not hurt, but one firefighter did have minor injuries.

Investigators are working to figure out what started the fire.
