WHITE SETTLEMENT (1080 KRLD)- A man who was scheduled to stand trial for intoxication manslaughter in Tarrant County has taken his own life.

Police in White Settlement say Donald Gruber shot himself at his home Saturday. His trial was just days off.

Gruber was arrested in August of 2022 after police say he was drunk when he drove his pickup truck into a home in White Settlement, killing 18-year-old Katey Kirkland. Her mother, Amy Kirkland, is ambivalent over Gruber's death.

Still, she wanted him to stand trial and face what he did. Not only was her daughter killed, but Kirkland's husband was also hurt in the accident. He is still recovering from injuries that left him disabled for life.
