Texas senator joins efforts to create a new law to help identify online predators, victims

A bipartisan legislation to protect children online promises to make it easier to find and prosecute predators, and rescue victims.

The Renewed Hope Act is designed to help federal authorities locate, investigate and prosecute those who exploit children online.

Senator John Cornyn of Texas thinks it’s too easy to exploit children online.

Cornyn and three others in Congress have co-sponsored legislation that would make it easier for police agencies to identify not only online predators but their victims as well. Senator Richard Blumenthal and Representatives Laurel Lee and Debbie Wasserman Schultz filed the bill to beef up the ability of investigators to track online activity and to rescue victims who may unknowingly have been exploited.

Cornyn says tens of thousands of children have their images manipulated for sharing with a hidden population of sexual deviants who prey upon unsuspecting young internet surfers. The legislation is designed to empower the Homeland Security Investigations unit with greater resources for investigation (learning about the latest forensic skills) and enforcement (the ability to hire more digital investigators).
