Dallas City Council approves $5 billion budget, largest in city's history

The Dallas City Council has unanimously approved the city budget for the 2024-25 fiscal year. It totals $4.97 billion, which is the largest in the city's history. It also sets the property tax rate at 70.47 cents per $100 of property value, which is a decrease of more than 3 cents.

"I am pleased to support a city budget that includes an historic property tax rate reduction for Dallas residents while prioritizing public safety, investing in parks, focusing on basic city services, and increasing government efficiency," Mayor Eric Johnson said. "With this data-driven budget, we can begin getting back to basics and building a better future for this great city."

The city will spend an additional $78 million on the Dallas Police Department and Dallas Fire-Rescue. That includes a plan to hire 250 new police officers and 63 new firefighters.

"This budget is focused and mindful of every tax dollar we spend, while addressing the needs of our residents and the priorities of the Dallas City Council," Interim Dallas City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert said.

The city's new fiscal year starts Oct. 1.
