'We can't do this forever,' Garcia says of decision to retire

The decision to retire from law enforcement didn't stem from any one event, but from the realization that no one can "do this forever," Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia says.

Last week, the news of Garcia's retirement -- and his transition into a civilian position in Austin -- leaked before the chief had an opportunity to make the announcement himself.

"I'm frustrated because of that, because I didn't get an opportunity to explain why," he said. "That's not the way my rank and file, who I absolutely adore, should have heard that."

His new job in Austin begins in early November, and he said he's looking forward to being able to be involved with his family as his children begin adult lives of their own.

"Anyone that thinks that there's balance in this job or in this position doesn't understand the role. There is no balance," Garcia said. "I come second, the department comes first. And that's the way I lead and that's the way I think any police chief should lead. You go as fast as you can and as hard as you can for as long as you can."
