The former Dallas police officer convicted of murder in 2019 for the fatal shooting of a man inside his own apartment, is eligible for parole.

In September 2018, Amber Guyger entered Botham Jean's apartment in Dallas' Cedars neighborhood, mistakenly believing it was her own. She said she thought Jean was an intruder and shot him.

Jean, a 26-year-old accountant, was unarmed and in his own home. A Dallas County jury found Guyger guilty of murder and sentenced her to 10 years in prison. The case drew national attention.

Guyger's parole eligibility comes on what would have been Jean's 33rd birthday. A parole hearing has not yet been scheduled, and Jean's family has been vocal in their desire for Guyger to serve her full sentence.
