Grand Prairie ISD says suspended superintendent violated policy

The Grand Prairie school board voted Wednesday night on a resolution accusing the superintendent of violating district policy. Jorge Arredondo was hired in June; he started July 1 but was placed on administrative leave in September.

No reason was given last month with board members citing an ongoing investigation.

The board started a meeting Wednesday evening and then moved into closed session. Three and a half hours later, trustees returned and voted 4-2 in support of a resolution accusing Arredondo of violating the district's discrimination and harassment policy.

"At the end of the day, me personally, I'm going to continue to stand on what policy states," Board President Amber Moffitt said during the meeting.

But Trustee Gloria Carrillo said Arredondo was never given a chance to respond to the accusation.

"I'm asking Dr. Arredondo be reinstated, that he be allowed to do the job this board voted 7-0 for him to do," Carrillo said.

Nine people signed up to speak to the board. Some said the district should provide details about what happened.

"Please be transparent with students, employees, parents and stakeholders," one woman said.

"If this is a backdoor to remove a superintendent some of you didn't want, that erodes our faith in you as elected officials," another person said.

The Grand Prairie school board could now move forward with a separation plan from Arredondo. That may include termination or his resignation. Deputy Superintendent Tracy Ray has been leading the district since Arredondo was placed on leave.
