16-year-old allegedly killed by drunk driver in Richmond: PD

( KRON ) — A 16-year-old was allegedly killed by a drunk driver in Richmond early Monday morning.

The Richmond Police Department said the suspect, Alexi Pineda Ticas, 30, has since been charged with vehicle manslaughter on the teenager with gross negligence and driving under the influence (DUI) resulting in injury.

Police received calls of a crash at the intersection of Ohio Avenue and South 20th Street just past midnight on Monday. Police said they arrived within two minutes and located two cars that had sustained “major damage.”

The driver and sole occupant of one of the vehicles, a 16-year-old male, “was trapped in the vehicle and succumbed to his injuries at the scene,” police said.

According to the Richmond Fire Department, suspect Ticas also sustained damage and “required extrication” from his car. Police said Ticas sustained minor injuries and “displayed objective signs of intoxication.” Preliminary investigations by police also revealed that “speeding and alcohol” may have been factored into the collision.

Police said Ticas, a Richmond resident, was taken to the hospital and booked at the RPD jail, where he has since been charged. This case is still under investigation.

“The impaired drivers decision to drive drunk robbed a family of their child. When you choose to drive under the influence, you're not just risking your own life-you're endangering everyone on the road,” RPD said.

“Before you head out, make a plan: arrange for a designated driver, use public transportation, or call a rideshare service. Your choices matter, and your safety is worth it,” Richmond police stressed.
