( KRON ) — The Hayward Police Department is investigating a car crash that led to the death of a man on Friday afternoon.

Police received reports of the car crash near the intersection of Jackson Street, east of Diadon Drive, at about 1:40 p.m.

The driver reportedly traveled eastbound on Jackson Street when “he veered off the road and collided into a cement pillar,” police said.

Responding officers arrived to find the driver, a 52-year-old non-Hayward resident, still at the scene, suffering from “major injuries” from the crash.

Police took the man to a nearby hospital for treatment. The following day, however, the man succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The man’s identity remains withheld until proper identification is made through the Alameda County Coroner’s Office and the victim’s next of kin is notified of the death.

Hayward PD says this is an active investigation, and it is not yet known whether alcohol was a factor in the crash.

Anyone with information is asked to call HPD’s traffic bureau at 510-293-7011.
