( KRON ) — North Oakland Community Charter School (NOCCS) is officially no longer allowed to operate for the 2024-25 school year, ruled an Alameda County Superior Court judge who denied a motion for a preliminary injunction on Thursday.

Oakland Unified School District’s (OUSD) Board of Education revoked NOCCS’ charter on June 5 due to the school allegedly failing to improve underperforming test scores, which went against a memorandum of understanding both parties agreed on.

The following day, NOCCS sued OUSD, alleging that OUSD did not give them a fair shot at a revocation process and that NOCCS had allegedly met the academic goals outlined in a 2019 agreement to keep the school open.

The resolution took effect on June 30, which required NOCCS staff to “immediately close with approximately two weeks notice to all students and their families, as well as teachers and staff,” NOCCS Board Chair Shaeonna Muhammad said in a declaration in court.

As NOCCS’ charter was revoked by OUSD, it is legally not permitted to operate a charter school or open for the 2024-25 school year as a charter school, OUSD said. NOCCS is now required to follow procedures for closing the school.

KRON4 has contacted NOCCS for comment and has not heard back as of the publication of this report.
