( KRON ) — The Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office is mourning the loss of one of their beloved K-9s after he was recently diagnosed with terminal cancer. K-9 Ronin passed away on Tuesday and was given a multi-agency processional in a final goodbye.

Following the terminal cancer diagnosis, Ronin's health quickly deteriorated, according to SCCSO. "His health took a turn and he was unable to perform the duties he loved doing each and every single day," the sheriff's office said.

Ronin lost the use of his hind legs, and it was decided that he would be euthanized.

"This is a very emotional and devastating time for the Sheriff's Office and Deputy Gonzalez," SCCSO said. Deputy Gonzalez was K-9 Ronin's handler since 2020.

"K-9 Ronin will never be forgotten," the sheriff's office said. "We will always remember how much love, care, and protection he has brought to Santa Clara County."

In his time with SCCSO, Ronin had over 500 deployments for critical incidents and participated in numerous community events, the sheriff's office said.

The San Jose Police Department, Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety, Santa Clara Police Department and Campbell Police Department joined the sheriff's office in a procession and final farewell for Ronin.
