( KRON ) — The San Jose Police Department has launched a homicide investigation into a grisly incident in which charred human remains were discovered at a homeless encampment. SJPD patrol officers responded at 4:33 p.m. Monday to “suspicious circumstances” near the area of Roberts Avenue and Vintage Way.

The reporting party, police said, told officers they had located the burned remains of a missing family member at a nearby homeless encampment. Officers arrived on the scene and found burned human remains and evidence suggesting the victim was murdered.

The San Jose PD Homicide Unit responded and took over the investigation. The motive and circumstances surrounding the incident are currently being investigated.

The identification of the victim is being withheld pending confirmation by the Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office and notification of next of kin. The event, police said, is being investigated as San Jose’s 21st homicide of 2024.
