IKEA to open new specialized location in Peninsula

( KRON ) — One year after opening a store in downtown San Francisco , IKEA announced on Thursday that it is expanding its presence in the Bay Area. The furniture store giant is opening a “Plan & Order Point with Pick-up” store in Colma this fall, IKEA announced in a press release.

Although this location won’t be the typical “large-format” shoppers are accustomed to, the Colma store is intended to complement the San Francisco store, IKEA said.

The specialized IKEA store will be located at 35 Colma Blvd., which is in the shopping center that has Marshall’s, Home Depot and Ashley HomeStore. The 2,340-square-foot space will offer personalized one-on-one consultation for home projects.

No items are available to be purchased and taken home from this IKEA store. Customers cannot return or exchange items at the Colma location.

And no, unfortunately, there is no IKEA-famous food court at the Colma establishment — unlike the San Francisco store .

“Our Plan and Order points are dedicated to Kitchen, Bedroom, and Living Room projects,” IKEA said on its website. “You can book a free design appointment with one of our expert co-workers, to give you all the support you need.

“Due to the limited space in our Plan and Order points, there are no items to purchase and take home on the day. For your convenience, purchases made at the Plan and Order points will be delivered to your home.”

There are three other traditional large-format IKEA stores in the Bay Area: San Francisco, Emeryville and East Palo Alto.
