(KRON) — A dog named Lucky and a calico cat named Cali were rescued by firefighters from a burning San Jose house this week . On Friday, fire victim Christopher Saplala said a second dog died in the blaze, and his surviving pets were severely injured from smoke and flames.

“We are fighting to save our cat, Cali, and dog, Lucky, that miraculously survived a house fire. We already lost one dog to the fire, Lady, who died of smoke inhalation. We want to save the two that we still have. The doctor has told us that the medical expenses will be tens of thousands of dollars to save them,” Saplala wrote on a GoFundMe page .

Saplala described his beloved pets’ veterinarian bills as overwhelming.

“They are alive and fighting to survive, and I simply can’t euthanize them after all that they have already been through. We also want to thank the firefighters and medical staff that helped our family on this tragic day,” Saplala wrote.

The pet owner shared a video with KRON4 showing Cali’s singed paws, legs, and face.

On Thursday morning, flames ripped through the two-story house on Century Manor Court in South San Jose. A firefighter was transported to a hospital with burn injuries. After firefighters carried Cali out of the house and placed an oxygen mask on the injured cat’s head, Cali was “alert and meowing.”
