The incident unfolded on Aug. 21, when officers responded to the hospital. The victim, who had come to the U.S. on a work visa to care for a family’s child, reported that Qi Li, 35-years-old of San Mateo had taken her passport, verbally abused her, and withheld payment.

The victim also recounted an incident where Li allegedly held a knife to her throat and threatened to kill her, said police. Officials said the victim is now receiving temporary housing and support services.

The investigation led to the arrest of Qi Li, who faces charges including human trafficking, felony criminal threats, and brandishing a weapon. He is currently held in San Mateo County Jail.

Authorities urge anyone with additional information to contact the San Mateo Police Department as the investigation is ongoing.
