MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. ( KRON ) — A large water main break on Charleston and Joaquin roads prompted street closures and catalyzed potential discolored water in Mountain View residents’ homes on Thursday afternoon.

Charleston Road between Huff Avenue and Shoreline Boulevard is temporarily closed until further notice, the city announced.

The water main break was initially reported at 1:45 p.m. Approximately 45 minutes later, city officials shut down Charleston Road and advised residents to seek alternate routes and expect traffic delays.

The City of Mountain View said the break caused high water flows through much of the city’s water system, “because of this, residents may be experiencing discolored water.”

“If you are experiencing discolored water, run the water in your home to clear it,” the city said in a statement. Although unusual, the city says the discolored water is “normal in these types of events” and is considered safe for use.

The city said crews have been able to isolate the break and are working to repair it as of the publishing of this report. As of 7 p.m., there is no estimated time for roads to reopen.
