OAKLAND, Calif. ( KRON ) — The Oakland Police Department is investigating the death of a man who was found unresponsive early Friday morning.

Police initially believed the death was due to a medical emergency, but a follow-up investigation proved otherwise.

OPD received a call about “an individual down on the street” at about 8:45 a.m. Friday.

Police said they responded to the 800 block of Webster Street and located the man, who was found unresponsive.

Oakland police tried rendering immediate aid to the man until medical personnel arrived. Once paramedics arrived, they pronounced the man dead at the scene.

Initial investigations, according to OPD, revealed that the man “likely had a medical emergency.”

The following day, however, police told KRON4 that a follow investigation determined that the man was physically assaulted by “multiple individuals.”

Police believe the man collapsed after being assaulted, leading him to later being found unresponsive.

This is an ongoing investigation. Anyone with the information is asked to contact OPD.
