‘Worst news of my life’: Mom killed in I-880 Oakland crash

(KRON) — A suspected DUI driver caused a chain-reaction collision on Interstate-880 in Oakland over Labor Day weekend, investigators said. A woman was killed in the I-880 crash, and she was identified by her family as Criscel Dela Rosa.

Rosa is survived by her 7-year-old daughter, husband, and father. The husband, Michael Dela Rosa, said he received a phone call quickly after the crash and heard “the worst news of my life.”

Instead of taking a long holiday weekend off, the hard-working mother was attempting to drive to work when the crash happened at 5:34 a.m. Sunday. “She is a very responsible person and very hard working,” her husband wrote on a verified GoFundMe page .

According to the California Highway Patrol, a Tesla Model Y, a Tesla Model 3 and a Toyota Rav4 were snarled into the crash. While the three cars were stopped along I-880’s northbound lanes near Embarcadero Avenue, a Freightliner box truck slammed into the back of Criscel Dela Rosa’s Tesla Model Y, CHP officers said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Tesla Model 3 driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence .

Michael Dela Rosa wrote, “I was awaken to the call that my wife was involved in a traffic collision. I tried desperately to call her and find out what happened to see if she was okay. I left my home in search of her along with my daughter and father-in law. When I arrived at the scene I was heartbroken. I can only imagine what pain she went through. My wife was not supposed to work on Sundays but came into work to help assist.”

A news reporter told the shocked husband that his wife’s body had been removed from her mangled Tesla and taken away by a coroner.

Criscel Dela Rosa was described as the “rock” of her family. Her husband wrote, “It tears my heart to hear my daughter crying and looking for her mother and asking me if she will come back home.”

The GoFundMe page was created to help raise donations for the victim’s funeral service.

California Highway Patrol officers deployed a Maximum Enforcement Period during Labor Day weekend focused on busting DUI drivers. Statewide, the CHP made nearly 1,400 arrests over the holiday weekend, with 1,140 arrests being in connection to driving under the influence.
