CONCORD, Calif. ( KRON ) — A longtime mom and pop business in Concord that shuttered over the weekend is back open and at a new location. Economics forced the closure, but the owners of Flying Colors Comics felt compelled to keep the business running for the community.

Don’t call it a fresh start, but rather the continuation of a really good thing.

“We’re keeping this business going because of the community,” explained co-owner Joe Field.

Flanked by a loyal small army of family, friends and staff, Joe and his wife Libby have been working at a fever pitch since Saturday when, for the final time at their original location at Oak Grove Plaza in Concord, they closed their doors.

They turned their attention to their new spot in town at Heritage Square off Concord Avenue across from Buchanan Field Airport.

“We did a lot of research finding just the right spot in Concord, and we are thrilled to be here,” said Libby.

Wednesday marked a new era for the East Bay staple that was on the brink of shuttering for good. When the Fields were not offered a lease renewal, it was either find a new space or retire.

Loyal patrons are grateful the couple chose comics.

“Comics, basically, have been kind of my saving grace for me. It’s why I started to read,” said customer Chris Walker.

For others, Flying Colors has been their safe space.

“The atmosphere, the love and care that Joe Field and all of my former co-workers have been able to give to people a sense of community,” said customer Dom of X.

That, Joe said, is what it is all about.

“There are a lot of people who rely on us, and we’re keeping this going to take care of everybody else,” he said.

For those internationally who look forward to Free Comic Book Day, Joe said fear not.
It will go on as planned next year on the first Saturday of May.
