( KRON ) – A South Bay pizza company suffered break-ins at both of its restaurants.

The first happened at A Slice of New York’s Sunnyvale shop back on Aug. 19. The burglar busted in through a window and rummaged through the restaurant but walked away without stealing anything.

Then, less than two weeks later, a burglar was seen throwing a rock through the front door of the San Jose shop. They also rummaged through the empty drawers.

The general manager says they don’t keep any cash at the two pizza places, but the damage is costly and insurance will not cover it.

A Slice of New York is also a worker’s co-op, meaning the employees own the pizza joints. This makes any break-ins or vandalism hurt even more.

“Everybody’s struggling in their various capacities. I don’t know what causes someone to start vandalizing businesses and stealing things. I get it if we sold cell phones or computers or shoes or whatever. We don’t have anything. Someone’s gonna take a case of cheese, flour, our sauce?” said A Slice of New York’s general manager Kirk Vartan.

Vartan says he would like to see more support for small businesses struggling with crime. He suggests cities like San Jose cover insurance deductibles on break-ins and vandalism.

The glass replacements are costing the business nearly $2,000.
