Fairfield police use ‘Find my iPhone’ app to find car full of stolen property

(FOX40.COM) — The Fairfield Police Department used a cell phone app that is traditionally used to locate family and friends or lost phones to catch two alleged thieves.

Fairfield police said in a Facebook post that officers responded on Tuesday to someone who reported that their stolen cell phone was near a mall.

The person was able to locate their missing phone using ‘Find my iPhone,’ an app that shows the user’s Apple devices, as well as contacts who allow their location to be tracked.

Police said they tracked the location to a parked vehicle with two passengers. Inside the vehicle was the iPhone, along with other stolen property including driver’s licenses, social security cards and power tools.

Police said “a large portion” of the items were linked to burglaries in Vacaville and Sacramento.

The two people in the car, ages 28 and 36, were arrested.

In the Facebook post, police advised people to contact police instead of confronting alleged thieves of stolen items.
