Alameda deputies deploy ‘gas irritant’ due to barricaded subject in Hayward, residents evacuate

( KRON ) — A man barricaded himself in a home early Wednesday morning in Hayward, causing Alameda County deputies to release a “gas irritant” that set off evacuations and shelter-in-place orders in the area, the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office said. A pit bull also bit a K-9 during the chaotic incident.

Deputies were dispatched to the 21000 block of Meekland Avenue at about 2:20 a.m. for what ACSO described as a “disturbance related to a court order violation.”

They arrived to find a man in his 30s brandishing a rifle at them. He later showed an object that looked like a stick of dynamite, ACSO said.

The deputies were able to get the family out of the home. Additional units called to the scene attempted to negotiate a peaceful surrender with the subject, but he continued to threaten harm against the deputies, per the sheriff’s office.

After he remained uncooperative, deputies urged neighbors to evacuate the area or shelter in place. They then deployed the gas irritant in an attempt to get the subject to surrender, the sheriff’s office said.

After they released the gas, a pit bull charged out of the home and attacked ACSO’s K-9. The K-9 suffered puncture wounds to its back leg and is expected to recover. Deputies are unsure if the suspect purposefully released the pit bull or if it left the home due to the gas.

The gas forced the suspect out of the home, and he barricaded himself in a yard. He was eventually arrested. ACSO did not provide his name.
