SAN FRANCISCO ( KRON ) — An allegedly armed man was shot by police at the Powell Street BART station on Friday. The station was shut down following the shooting, which occurred at around 10:30 a.m., but service has since resumed,

According to San Francisco Police Chief William Scott, officers were proactively patrolling the area when they encountered an armed suspect sitting in a vehicle that was not moving. The suspect, police said, was visibly armed.

Officers encountered the suspect on the 400 block of Jesse Street at about 10:18 a.m.

Officers formulated a plan to contain the suspect and pursued him for a couple of blocks. Police said he led them into a store and then came out of the store. Police continued to pursue the armed man down into the BART plaza where the shooting occurred.

All of the shots were fired down in the BART plaza, rather than at street-level. The suspect was wounded in the shooting and transported to the hospital in fair condition. Police said they have identified the suspect but declined to release his identity at this time.

No one else was injured in the shooting, Chief Scott said. Police say a firearm was recovered at the scene.

The vehicle the suspect was in was stolen, according to police.

Service at the adjoining Muni station was also disrupted but has since resumed, according to the San Francisco Municipal Transit Authority. Powell Street cable cars on the Hyde and Mason lines were also impacted and will switch back southbound to northbound, according to the SFMTA.

The incident occurred just a few days before the beginning of the annual Salesforce Dreamforce conference. Chief Scott said officers will be “heavily deployed” during the conference next week.
