Dog dies in Pleasanton apartment from heat stroke

( KRON ) — A dog that was left in an apartment died from heat stroke on Tuesday, the Pleasanton Police Department announced on social media. Police received a call around noon about a dog being left alone on a balcony near Gibraltar Drive and Hacienda Drive.

The caller said the dog was barking and whining as it was exposed to the sun, according to PPD. Temperatures reached into the mid-90s and nearly 100 degrees as much of the East Bay was under a Heat Advisory .

A Pleasanton Animal Services officer, following protocol, contacted the apartment’s leasing office to try and get a hold of the dog’s owner. The officer was unsuccessful.

According to PPD, within 15 minutes of receiving the call, police arrived at the apartment unit and found the dog passed away from heat stroke.

Police called this a “disturbing and tragic incident.” According to PPD, a video of the dog was circulating on social media, which prompted many concerns from the community.

The community, including comments on the department’s Facebook post , have expressed their concerns with some calling for the dog owner to be charged. However, a preliminary investigation suggests the incident was not intentional. The investigation is ongoing.

PPD emphasized the importance of keeping pets healthy amidst a heat wave.

“If you see something, please report it immediately rather than waiting to share it on social media,” the department wrote. “With the hot weather, it is crucial to keep all animals cool indoors and ensure they have access to water. If you witness any animals in distress, please call 9-1-1 right away.”
