( KRON ) — Finally, the Bay Area will see a break from the heat that has gripped the region for the past several days. Forecasters say temps will have a gradual cooldown on Monday but remain warm and above average, especially in inland areas.

Daytime highs Monday will be mostly in the upper 70s to 80s on the coast, in the 80s to 100s around the bay, and in the upper 90s to 100s inland. Overnight lows will be mostly in the 50s, with some areas reaching the 60s.

“This is the last of our very hottest days with yet another afternoon reaching the 90s and 100s after record shattering highs yesterday,” said KRON4 Meteorologist John Shrable. “Tonight into tomorrow morning, expect some big changes with daytime highs dropping sharply, back down into the 70s and low 80s at the warmest for most areas.”

Despite the approaching cool down a heat advisory remains in effect until 11 p.m. Monday over the North Bay Interior Valleys, Northern Salinas Valley, San Francisco Bay Shoreline, East Bay, South Bay including San Jose, Santa Cruz Mountains, Eastern Santa Clara Hills, Southern Salinas Valley, interior Monterey County including Pinnacles National Park, the Marin and Sonoma coastal ranges, and North Bay Interior Mountains.

Extreme heat is expected to subside heading into Tuesday as we see a return to temperatures that are closer to normal for this time of year.

“The rest of this week’s forecast looks to continue that general break from the extreme heat,” said Shrable.
