EL CERRITO, Calif. ( KRON ) — One person was injured after a shooting Tuesday morning in El Cerrito, the El Cerrito Police Department (ECPD) said. The shooting happened around 10:30 a.m. on the 1800 block of Elm Street near Summit K2 school.

Officers arrived at the scene and located one person who had been shot, according to ECPD. Shortly after, they detained a person who was identified as the shooter.

The person was airlifted to a hospital, police said. The school was temporarily placed on precautionary lockdown.

Upon further investigation, detectives determined that a 56-year-old unhoused man from Contra Costa County unlawfully entered a home. According to ECPD, the resident — who “feared for his life” — shot the unhoused man twice with a shotgun.

The unhoused man was not armed with a weapon when he was shot, police said. He is currently receiving treatment for his injuries. The resident was taken for questioning, police said.

Police said the lockdown has since been lifted. Police departments from Richmond and Kensington helped ECPD secure the scene.

“The El Cerrito Police Department intends to present a criminal case for burglary to the District Attorney’s Office,” the department wrote.
