( KRON ) — A K-9 that specialized in narcotics detection for the Petaluma Police Department has passed away, officials announced Saturday. K-9 Jeff joined the department in 2011 and served until retirement in 2017.

K-9 Jeff was part of the Drug Enforcement Administration task force when he was first assigned to the department in 2011. In that role, K-9 Jeff took part in investigations that targeted major drug traffickers throughout California, Petaluma PD said.

Throughout K-9 Jeff’s time with the department, he “continued to assist in countless drug-related arrests and searches, playing a crucial role in keeping narcotics off the streets,” Petaluma police said.

K-9 Jeff made “significant” detections of narcotics and made a “substantial impact on the community and law enforcement efforts,” according to officials.

Throughout his time with the Petaluma Police Department, K-9 Jeff was assigned to Detective Rick Cox, K-9 Officer Aaron Lindh and K-9 Officer John Antonio.

After Jeff’s retirement in 2017, he lived with Officer Antonio and his family, “enjoying a peaceful life filled with love and care until his passing,” Petaluma PD said.

“RIP, Jeff. You were a good boy!”
