Oakland Mayor Thao delivers State of the City address

OAKLAND, Calif. ( KRON ) — It’s been a tough year for Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao, from her home being raided by the Federal Bureau of Investigations to the recall vote in three weeks. In Tuesday night’s State of the City address, Thao focused on crime, the budget, public safety and highlighted the positives she’s done over the last year.

During the address, Thao said Oakland’s crime has gone down because of a ceasefire strategy and the 200-plus Flock cameras she implemented. The mayor added that she’s working to get the first responder drone program off the ground for better response times.

When it comes to the city’s multi-million dollar budget crisis, Thao said the sale of the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum will help the issue. Her critics question the details of that sale and when final payments will be made.

In a statement to KRON4, Oakland Police Officers Association Vice President Tim Dolan said that Thao did not address the financial issues facing Oakland.

“The mayor did not address any of the financial issues in the city including the contingency budget plan being put into place,” Dolan said. “Crime is plaguing the city of Oakland and our response times have increased. The police department has not been provided any information regarding staffing or potential reductions. This is the time to invest into the police department and put more cops on the street. I worry for the city’s future with deterring crime and keeping the people of Oakland safe.”

Thao said she believes in Oakland, and the people in it.

The mayor faces a recall vote in November.
